Gallery — Seattle to Victoria from Above

These photos were taken from two rather small planes during a 2007 round trip between Seattle, Washington and Victoria, British Columbia.

I’m not a good flyer under the best of circumstances. It was all I could do to pay attention to the view, and I managed to snap a few shots in spite of myself.

I think this perspective on landscape images is fascinating. Slower, lower-altitude flights in these short-hop planes present an unusual opportunity to see the landscape “up close and personal.” Man-made structures provide scale to vast spaces; you can pick out details to construct your own imaginary narrative about how these places came to be, and what’s going on down there.
